INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2 : Data Collection
The general theme is “Cultural Sensitivity in Design” , so the chosen culture of our team is DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD).

In selecting face paint as the final idea for our project, we aim to delve deeper into the intricacies of this art form. To enrich our understanding and gain valuable insights, we intend to conduct a comprehensive data collection process through a combination of online and offline interviews. These interviews will allow us to gather diverse perspectives and experiences from experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts, thereby enhancing the depth and authenticity of our project's exploration into the world of face paint.

Research of Face Paint from the culture Day of the Dead

1. Data Collection from offline interview

For our interview, we've chosen to visit Chica Bonita Mexican Kitchen & Bar, situated in Publika. Reflecting the vibrant essence of Mexican culture, Chica Bonita Mexican Kitchen & Bar offers a visually captivating experience. With its bold, patterned tiles, a display of sugar skulls, and fluorescent-lit murals, the ambiance is truly striking. Enhanced by lively Latin tunes, stepping into this establishment instantly fills us with energy and excitement. Notably, Chica Bonita also pays homage to Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead. In anticipation of our interview with the manager Miss Ashrini , we've prepared a set of questions to glean insights and experiences regarding Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead celebration.

2. Data Collection from online interview
For our online data collection, we employed Google Form to conduct interviews with participants. This platform enabled us to gather a wide range of information and understand diverse perspectives on the Day of the Dead culture. Understanding these viewpoints is crucial as it informs our design process for the face masks, ensuring they resonate with people's perceptions and preferences.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Charles provided us with feedback regarding the sketches of the face masks. He expressed a preference for a less celebratory design, emphasizing the need for originality. Specifically, he suggested that the face masks should incorporate black or white elements around the face for a distinctive appearance. Furthermore, he proposed that the face masks could symbolize familial unity, with each member representing unique characteristics, such as the father using black foundation. Additionally, he recommended incorporating shared elements, such as a family flower, to signify unity. Mr. Charles also suggested the use of glow-in-the-dark paints, which he deemed special compared to traditional options.

REFLECTIONS
I learned a great deal from this task about gathering data from individuals with extensive experience. Initially, I found the task challenging as it required obtaining diverse information from people rather than solely relying on online sources. However, our group effectively managed the data collection process through strong collaboration.

During the first data collection phase, I gained valuable insights from Miss Ashrini, who shared her extensive experience with the celebration of the Day of the Dead. She provided personal anecdotes and detailed information about the culture, inspiring me to conduct further research.

For the second data collection, we utilized Google Forms to gather perspectives from individuals who had and had not participated in the Day of the Dead celebration. Their responses allowed us to understand their thoughts and perceptions regarding this cultural event.

Following the data collection, I took on the responsibility of data analysis, working closely with my teammate Caiyi. Together, we analyzed the data, gaining a deeper understanding of public perceptions of the culture. This information served as a valuable reference point as we proceeded with redesigning the face masks.
