Class Summary

We were assigned to create a one page introduction of your visual novel or comic to your readers with at least one animated panel. We must choose the one that has the best timing in the story flow and transitions of the visuals that strongly reflect the narrative through characters, panels, particle effects, texts etc.

Final Project Progression

1. Research

After having a lot of research, I have some ideas in my mind. I decide to have a design more about the story of the cat. As the cat is being killed by its owner in the story, I decide to draw out the story before the cat being killed using the angle of view of the cat.

2. Sketches

Fig 13.6 Sketch

For the ideation of this sketch :

Act 1 : The black cat is peacefully dozing on the floor, patiently waiting the arrival of its beloved owner.

Act 2 : As the door swung open, the cat's ears perked up in response, sensing the sound.

Act 3 : With swift agility, the cat  dashed towards the door filled with joyful anticipation.

Act 4 : Engaged in a playful interaction with its owner, the cat playfully nibbled on the hand that held a bottle of wine.

Act 5 : From the reflection of the eye we can know that its owner is angry and taking a knife towards the cat.

Act 6 : The owner of the cat kills the cat and throw it on the floor, and the blood is spilled everywhere.

3. Digitalize

In my decision, I opt to utilize black and yellow as the primary colors for the character. To create an eerie atmosphere befitting the horror story set at night, I select a background shade of either gray or dark brown. The choice of dark hues sets the stage for a foreboding ambiance, while the color yellow serves as a striking highlight to accentuate certain aspects of the character.

Fig 13.8 Background Decision

After conducting experiments with two different background colors, I ultimately settle on gray as the ideal choice for the backdrop. Its subdued tone complements the desired dark atmosphere of the story, enhancing the overall ambiance and setting the stage for a chilling narrative.

4. Gif animated

To animate the GIF, I employed the power of keyframes. They strategically placed keyframes at specific points along the timeline, representing different stages of movement and transformation for the elements. By carefully adjusting the properties of each keyframe, they achieved seamless motion and transitions.

For the animation of Act 2, a decision was made to add an extra layer of expression to the cat's happiness. The chosen approach involved incorporating subtle ear movements to depict the cat's delight upon hearing its owner returning home.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I carefully crafted different keyframes, each representing a distinct ear position and orientation. The initial keyframe depicted the cat's ears in a relaxed state, symbolizing its calm anticipation. As the animation progressed, subsequent keyframes were introduced to showcase the cat's ears gradually perking up, reflecting its growing excitement.

For the animation in Act 3, the focus shifted to the black cat's enthusiastic response as it hurriedly walked towards the door, eagerly welcoming its owner. The black cat's walk towards the door was further enhanced by paying attention to other details, such as tail movement and body posture. These subtle nuances added an extra layer of authenticity to the animation, amplifying the cat's excitement and eagerness.
