LECTURES

WEEK 5: Typography Task 2 Demo Progress

Mr Vinod brief us about the do and don't for Typography Task 2 in class. The details and progression of the tutorial of the task is uploaded in lecture playlist. Through the tutorial form Mr Vinod we can know how to start and develop our task.

Lectures can be referred to TASK 1

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 2 - Text Formatting and Expression

Mr. Vinod show to us on how we are to go about with this assignment starting with the selection of text and sketches. For Task 2, we have to create a 2-page editorial spread (200 x 200) with the provided texts in Adobe InDesign. No images and only black and white colour, less graphical elements, example line, shade, etc. can be allowed. We are to use Adobe InDesign to typographically to kern and express the text, and can use Adobe Illustrator for the headline expression.

đź’—Design Processđź’—
1. Sketches

Fig. 1.1 Sketches

For the type expression, I try to focus on the word "visualise" because I think it is the main subject for the heading. I wanted to express unite by connecting the words with a line, I connect the letters such as the letter t and l as a line.

Typeface: Futura Std. Book
Font Size: 60 pt

After the sketches, I developed the sketches in Adobe InDesign, as my sketches is simple and not needed to use in Adobe Illustrator.

Fig. 1.1 Digitalize type expression

For the letter 'e' in the word visualise I use some line and a circle to make it look like an eye to express visual.

2. Text Layout Progress

Typeface: Univers LT Std
Font Size: 9 pt
Leading: 12pt

I use Univers LT Std for the typeface because it looks more comfortable compare to the other fonts. It does not look to crowded or to light after kerning so it is the best choice for me to choose. It looks better after kerning and I try to avoid widows and orphan while kerning.

3. Headline Progress

Fig. 1.1 Headline Layouts

For the first design of the layout is the digitalize of my sketches. It looks to simple and I want to make it too be more interesting so I change the font size of the word 'visualise' and 'world' in the second layout. For the third layout I change the line straight and I find it more comfortable than the line oblique. I also add a small graphic for the letter O to let it be seen as our Earth.

Final Task 2: Typographic Exploration and Communication

After experimenting different layouts I decided to choose the second option of the layout add the little graphic of the Earth. I decide to choose the second layout because I like the expression of the headline in the difference of the the font size to emphasize the importance of the word 'visualise' and 'world'.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
Specific Feedback:
There is too much graphical, avoid having too much graphic design that is not related with the text. Remember not to write the wrong word. The spacing is a little bit awkward can make it be better. The expression is ok and it is expressed but can make it better. The headline if it is seperated, the two fonts need to be more similiar because it may disturb the looking while reading the headline.

General Feedback:
Be careful when using justify, it is better to be 7mm for the leading rather than 5mm but at least 5mm. Need to have more expression on the headline, can express one of the word in the headline.

Week 7
Specific Feedback:
The pen need to use not same size to write is better.

General Feedback:
For the square shape pen need to keep the writing direction in the same way.

Week 8
Specific Feedback:
Mr Vinod prefer the writing using marker, it’s weightier and will make a cooler display font.

General Feedback:
We need to write out the letters not to design the letters. Use different types of pen can make different interesting writing.

REFLECTIONS

Experience:
Through these few weeks of class of typography, I have known more information and details that process and develop on typography. I realize that it is important to do a sketch before any exercise. It must be the first progress on every task, as it helps to develop ideas and to know if my idea can work or not. It is a good way to learn by watching video as I can rewatch anything that I miss from Mr Vinod everytime. How to have difference within my work with others is to look and work more in details, as the word says that the devil is in the detail.

Observation:
Typography is a thing we will use in our everyday life. It is a need for us to make our life better by knowing the importance of the details in typography. I learn how to do typography in creative ways to integrate typography into their compositions, treating letters and words as visual elements rather than mere conveyors of information. Through these few weeks of class I learn that typography is used as a means to create emphasis, hierarchy, and visual interest, often through techniques like kerning, layering, or combining it with other graphic elements. As the most important thing I learn is how to kern the text.

Findings:
Through the progression of Task 2, I found that different typeface and font size evoke distinct perceptions and the layout design. We must try on different typeface and font size to find out the best layout of the work. Besides, experimental and expressive different typography materials explore innovative techniques, such as custom lettering, typographic illustrations, or kinetic typography. These approaches push boundaries, challenge traditional norms, and offer new avenues for creative expression and artistic exploration.

FURTHER READING

Fig. 1.1 The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli

The famous Italian designer Massimo Vignelli allows us a glimpse of his understanding of good design in this book, its rules and criteria. He uses numerous examples to convey applications in practice from product design via signaletics and graphic design to Corporate Design. By doing this he is making an important manual available to young designers that in its clarity both in terms of subject matter and visually is entirely committed to Vignelli’s modern design.

Fig. 1.1 29th page of The Vignelli Canon

"The Vignelli Canon" covers a wide range of topics, from the historical evolution of letterforms to the anatomy of type. It explores the significance of typeface classifications and their appropriate usage, empowering readers to make informed decisions when selecting fonts for different design projects. The book also dives into the art of kerning, leading, and tracking, revealing the secret to achieving optimal legibility and visual harmony.

Semantics: search of meaning of design,  before design , we have to search the essential meanings and learn their complexities
Pragmatic :we prefer to  intellectually elegant and timeless design.
Syntactics: include structure, the grid, the typeface, texts, illustration etc., controls the proper use of grammar and articulation of a language.
